I would argue that Richard Leacock, Don A. Penebaker, Albert & David Maysles, Charlotte Zwerin, Joris Ivens, Barbara Kopple, Werner Herzog, and many many fiction filmmakers would rank as some of the best low budget storytellers ever....if you want to name drop that is.

I worked with the shooter of Buena Vista Social club on a Wim Wenders TV commerical.
I think the reason that they(Jorg Widmer) shot video over film was crew concerns. He is a steadicam guy and to have film and a steadicam you have to have more people. That is just a part of it I am sure.
As for Ricky Leacock the old fart is shooting video. He has become a poster boy of sorts for it. Which is kind of a shame. He and I had a chat about it at length some time ago and I feel that he made the switch as an attempt to stay young--He is in his 80's. It might also make sense for him since he is still making the same out moded V?rit? films.
Live long--Shoot film!!!

I had a great talk with Albert Maysles and he too mention how he is having fun with video cameras. The one guy that continues to shoot film is Frederick Wiseman. His reason, he dosen't like the way it looks. No better reason than that! Out moded verite? Can realism be out moded? Hmmmmmmm?

Thanks for backing me up Avortex. If it's good enough for Emir Kustrica, it's good enough for me. He's the best low budget storyteller I can think of.
